The Gray Lady

There is something about winter that makes me want to wear neutrals. While the skies are gloomy it would make sense to wear colorful pieces to brighten my day and mood. Neutrals are just comfortable - like a home cooked meal. It's easy to pull together an entirely neutral outfit because each piece fits cohesively. Pull together a pair of black skinnies and a black turtleneck and you're as classic and polished as Audrey Hepburn in Funny Face. However, if black seems rather harsh, try gray. The lightness will brighten your face and it doesn't feel heavy - even when you're layered. Even when the skies are gray, you'll stand out.

Black and Cognac

Cognac may not be brown exactly, but it is fairly close. And a lot of people dislike mixing brown and black. A lot of fashion rules have been broken these past few years and this is definitely one to break. Honestly, black and cognac are the perfect mixture. The softness of the cognac tones down the harshness of the black. I call it girly minimalism.

On My Mind

1. Loft 50% off sale: Everything is 50% off with the code NOEXCUSES. It is taking all my energy to not shop this sale. I have excuses, sorry Loft. I promised myself no shopping until certain cards were paid off. While I wait, I can't help but look at the new spring items. The weather may still not be cooperating, but it's about time to bring out the colors! Their new work items are just darling. If any of you end up purchasing, let me know what items you bought! I will live vicariously through your shopping.

2. La La Land: Literally everyone is going gaga for La La Land. I hadn't gotten the chance to view the film before the Golden Globes and I truly wish I had. This happens all the time. The hype over a film always draws me in and then it falls short of my expectations. La La Land is a wonderful film, don't get me wrong. Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling are absolutely the perfect pair. But is it going to be the greatest film I see this year? No. I did enjoy the roller coaster of emotions, the wardrobe, and the singing. I would still rate La La Land as a must see.

3. Stella: Growing up we had a Chow named Cinnamon. After she passed my parents refused any notion of another dog. I had a hamster, but that was the farthest the pet road would go (especially after said hamster had a million babies). After my brother and I moved out of the house I thought my mom would definitely talk my dad into getting a puppy. The talk has stretched out forever and finally they broke down and got the most adorable Boston Terrier puppy! And named her Stella. I'm not even embarrassed to admit I have been stopping by my parent's house nearly daily to see her.

4. The Woman Who Would Be King: I only gave this book 3 stars on Goodreads, but I do believe it is an important book. Hatshepsut was an Egyptian Queen who rose to the rank of King. This book tells her story (as best as possible). It is refreshing to see an ancient woman portrayed as something more than her body. While I found the writing style to be a little odd, I enjoyed the story it told.

5. Power Rangers: As a child I absolutely loved watching Power Rangers. My love truly stayed with the original, but I get why they branched. It should come as no surprise that I am ecstatic about the new film! Obviously things won't be the same, but I am thrilled to see everything updated. Kimberly and Jason forever.

Pinned It Spinned It

Occasionally I wake up 30 minutes before I need to be at work. During those murky morning hours I find I have a rough time trying to put together outfits. A quick peek at Pinterest usually jogs my brain. I found this adorable outfit by Extra Petite and just had to "spin" it. Funnily enough I had basically every piece (which means I didn't have to think as much). It was the perfect work outfit. And I just adore this herringbone skirt! It goes with everything!

With the warm weather pushing through this Saturday, I figured I would post a very winter blog. Sixty five degrees this weekend! It is lovely, but January should be full of snow and cuddles.

Cake Bake Shop

Northside Kitchenette

I finally made it to the Cake Bake Shop. My friend, Carol, and I had brunch at the Northside Kitchenette (which is adorable and delicious). Since the Cake Bake Shop was literally around the corner, we decided to grab some dessert. The shop was still decorated for Christmas, but if they kept the decorations up year round I wouldn't be mad. It is small, but it just makes it feel even more cozy. There is even a back room for larger parties. I tried the Sipping Chocolate -  a teensy drink that is very delicious, but very rich. I couldn't even finish that tiny cup. I nabbed a red velvet and carrot cake. The slices are quite generous, so it is definitely something you'll take home to snack on. The best part about their treats? A little bit of sparkle is added to each cake making them shimmer even in the worst light.

When in Indiana

I recall saying writing that August/early September was the worst, but in all actuality it's January and February. Don't get me wrong, I love the snow. Give me all the winter wonderlands, but the zero degree Fahrenheit temperatures are awful. If I were lounging on the couch in my pajamas and cuddling with the dogs it wouldn't be an issue. I am usually working though. It's hard to dress in these situations. You can only wear so many sweater-over-collared-shirt combinations. Today, I tried something a little different: putting a turtleneck under my collared shirt. A thick turtleneck sweater wasn't going to work, but this thin option is perfect. The blazer just adds more protection warmth. Even my legs need three layers. Is it May yet?
